GlobalBlock's First Anniversary: A Year of Transforming Online Brand Protection

ccTLD Brand protection Domains

GlobalBlock recently celebrated one year since its launch, a significant milestone for intellectual property and online brand protection—and the culmination of years of collaboration and planning.

We're excited to share an update on GlobalBlock's journey and its impact on protecting brands in the domain name space.

As we wrote about when it launched, GlobalBlock was developed in response to countless conversations with brand owners and IP professionals, who repeatedly showed the need for better tactics to prevent online brand abuse using domain names.

After decades of status quo strategies that relied on thousands of defensive domain registrations, risky decisions and expensive and time-consuming litigation and disputes, brands were fed up with the unreliable, piecemeal approach to brand protection.

To date, GlobalBlock includes more than 630 web extensions including new and generic TLDs, ccTLDs and Web3.0 extensions from all over the world. Its scale of coverage is unprecedented, protecting millions of domains across thousands of unique brand labels.

But the practical benefits for brands go beyond the peace of mind of knowing they’re protected.

Through its unique features such as Priority AutoCatch Assurance, GlobalBlock has reclaimed thousands of domains that were registered by third parties and placed them back in the hands of brands, saving the time and expense of domain disputes, takedowns or acquisitions.

In addition, brands have saved 60% on average compared to individually registering these protected domains as part of a defensive portfolio.

The data speaks for itself—but the words of our customers and partners have also been overwhelmingly positive and humbling to hear.

Brands tell us every day that we’ve helped them solve real business problems, save money and improve operational efficiencies.

Likewise, Registries are seeing the benefits of proactively preventing abuse in their extensions, improving the overall health of their namespaces and building consumer trust.

To mark GlobalBlock’s first anniversary, we released our inaugural Domain Protection Report an annual publication dedicated to uncovering key trends in domain security, intellectual property threats, and brand protection strategies.

We’re excited to share this publication with you, which will include a deep dive into facts and figures of GlobalBlock’s first year.

The Brand Safety Alliance is fortunate to have the support of Registries, agents, and other partners and we are incredibly grateful for their participation, feedback and collaboration over the past years.

We look forward to bringing more features and enhancements to GlobalBlock and continuing to grow its coverage, building even greater value and protection for global brands.

Cyber security Domains

The world of online brand protection is unpredictable and ever-changing, and no one could foresee the sustained impact of a global pandemic on infringement rates and cybersquatting cases. Cybersquatting is the practice of registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name with the bad-faith intent of profiting from the goodwill of someone else’s trademark. WIPO created the UDRP in 1999, and is the global leader in case administration services.
